Pregnancy-Safe Skincare Favorites from Amazon

Not all of us are lucky enough to have the so-called “pregnancy glow”, at least not without the help of a consistent skin care routine. In fact, you may not be getting as much sleep during pregnancy and might need a little extra help to keep the skin looking hydrated and youthful.

I’m sharing with you some of my favorite pregnancy-safe skincare products on Amazon. As with anything, you should consult with your doctor about any skincare products that you plan to use during pregnancy.

Some skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy:

1. Retinoids and Retinol:

These vitamin A derivatives are commonly used for anti-aging and acne treatment. However, excessive vitamin A intake during pregnancy can lead to birth defects. Avoid products containing retinol, retinyl palmitate, tretinoin, adapalene, and isotretinoin.

2. Hydroquinone:

This ingredient is used to lighten dark spots and hyperpigmentation. While studies on its safety during pregnancy are inconclusive, it's best to err on the side of caution and opt for alternative brightening solutions.

3. Salicylic Acid (high concentration):

While salicylic acid in low concentrations (below 2%) is generally considered safe during pregnancy, higher concentrations used in certain acne treatments may pose risks. Consult your doctor before using products containing salicylic acid.

4. Benzoyl Peroxide:

This common acne-fighting ingredient can irritate the skin and potentially cause birth defects in high doses. Opt for gentler alternatives for managing acne during pregnancy.

5. Essential Oils:

While generally considered safe in diluted amounts, certain essential oils like clary sage, jasmine, and rosemary can stimulate uterine contractions or be harmful if ingested. Avoid using undiluted essential oils and consult your doctor before using any during pregnancy.

6. Aluminum Chloride:

This ingredient is commonly found in antiperspirants. While research on its safety during pregnancy is limited, some studies suggest potential risks. Opt for aluminum-free deodorants during this time.

7. Formaldehyde:

This preservative can be found in some skincare products and is a known irritant. Avoid products containing formaldehyde, especially those applied directly to the face.

Remember:

  • Always consult your doctor before starting any new skincare regimen, especially during pregnancy.

  • Look for gentle, natural, and fragrance-free products whenever possible.

  • Opt for physical sunscreens over chemical ones, as they are less likely to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

  • Don't be afraid to experiment and find pregnancy-safe alternatives that work for your skin.

1. The Camellia Cleansing Oil by Tatcha (Oil-Based Cleanser) – Bold statement: This is my favorite oil cleanser of all time. It glides the make up right off and is so gentle on my skin. I’ve tried others and always end up coming back to this one.

2. CeraVe Hydrating Facial Wash (Water-Based Cleanser) – I ALWAYS double cleanse after wearing makeup. I start with the oil-based cleanser to get my makeup off, and then cleanse with a water-based cleanser. I love that this one is inexpensive, but still effective for my dry/normal skin. I use this when I’m not pregnant too.

3. Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops (Serum) – I love this Niacinamide Serum! The price point is reasonable and it works well to keep my skin smooth and hydrated.

4. Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream SPF30 (Moisturizer) – This moisturizer is so thick and creamy, a little goes a long way!

5. Sunday Riley Auto Correct (Eye Cream) – You can continue using this during those first few months after baby is born to help with those dark circles that the newborn life will definitely bring.

6. Mighty Patch (Spot Patches) – Perfect for acne spot treatment! I’ll usually put these on after the rest of my skincare routine before I go to bed and then take them off first thing in the morning. I use them so often that I have them on “Subscribe and Save” auto-delivery.

7. DRMTLY Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46 (Sunscreen) – SPF is a must during the day, but finding pregnancy safe options isn’t easy. I’ve really enjoyed this one from DRMTLGY! It’s tinted, but provides almost no coverage so I will usually layer makeup on top of this. But it’s very lightweight and doesn’t feel like a sunscreen. If you’re looking for something with SPF with a little more coverage, my favorite tinted moisturizer is the Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue.

8. Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask (Lip Balm) – I feel like everyone has this lip balm, which goes to show how great it is.
